By Stefanie Amini, Marketing Director, WalkMe

Market research is able to give businesses a prospective picture over the products and services which they can release in order to gain profits. Many companies have already done these kinds of studies, but after they’ve spent large amounts of money on them, they found out that the feedback gained as a result of these studies was too hard to implement. So, how can we avoid this type of error?

We often think of marketing research studies even before we put our business on the market. We consider that they need to be very elaborate and precise, indicating that they should therefore cost a large amount of money. The good news is that we can probe the market with little cost, but we have to ensure that the research is done correctly and that the feedback is easy to implement.

There are entrepreneurs who are facing the fact that they cannot afford market research before they launch their business. However, you cannot afford not to do a substantial market research exercise. Even if you start a business or launch a new product, you have to see if there is a demand for that product or service. If you already know the product you are looking for, you might be interested in opinions from the client in question.

If there is no guarantee on the success of the product or service that will be released, then it’s strongly recommended that you contact the individuals and companies who could become clients. Discussions can be useful to provide perspective, and you may obtain further market intelligence. Furthermore, this dialogue will open the possibility that these potential clients could use your product or service in the future.

Launching a product in a given market should show that you have strong knowledge of the industry you’re activating in, including extreme awareness of your competitors in that segment. Therefore, contacting associations, visiting the Chamber of Commerce and other concerned institutions, or participating in trade fairs should become a habit. Using these opportunities to network with the greater community will help you develop business leads as well as enhance your own understanding of your market.

There is useful information in the possession of different institutions, information which can be obtained quite easily. For example, if you want to open a restaurant and you’re considering renting or buying a space found on a street corner, you can check the traffic of the target area during a certain period of time, etc.

Once you have gathered information about the market, you must also analyse the competition. The biggest mistake an entrepreneur can make is to discount both competitor business categories: the direct competitors, and the indirect or perceived competitors. For instance, a future fitness trainer must take into account both markets: the other personal trainers, and also the other fitness clubs available.

How to analyse your competition? Again, there is no need for fabulous sums of money to spy over competitors. A look at the competition’s advertising, brochures, prices, or special offers promises to deliver enough evidence for a strong analysis. There is also the “mystery shopping” research, where you hire a company to buy and test the products from your competition and tell you their opinion about them.

Another very effective way to look for clues is by having a look over the published articles and press releases of your competitors, especially since many of them can be found on the internet. Through such means, you’ll get to see how they manage to exceed their rivals and how they promote themselves to their potential online customers.

Any entrepreneur must bring a novelty or value addition to the products or services they are launching and to try being a little different than the others. Standing out from the market and competitors is imperative to launching a strong business. If you can offer something useful that someone else can’t, that will put you at a strong advantage and enable potential growth.

When doing marketing research, it’s also crucial to avoid some common errors. Here are the most important 4 of them:

- Using only secondary research. If you choose to rely solely on other people’ published work, chances are that you will not get the full picture. Of course, this is still a great point to start from, but keep in mind that the information you obtain from secondary research can be outdated. Thus, you are likely to miss some important and relevant factors for your business.

- Using only web resources. By merely using search engines for information gathering purposes, you’ll only see the data which is available for everyone. Moreover, this data might not always be entirely accurate. In order to gain a deeper knowledge of your competition, you might take advantage of resources from trusted business resources such as industry-related publications and press coverage.

- Surveying only those who you know. Sometimes, business owners choose to interview only their close colleagues or family members in order to reduce costs. However, this method does not guarantee accurate information. For the most up-to-date data, you have to get in touch with the real customers out in the real world.

- Not using web tools to analyse customer behaviour. Perhaps you don’t want to do research if your product already is being used. But maybe you would like to know where the problems are occurring. Using guidance software such as WalkMe will help you through the tasks required to analyse customer behaviour and performs them in real time. The analytics that WalkMe offers can help you understand the customer and help improve the service you provide.

By using these tips, you can start to understand the needs of your customers. This advice is designed specifically to help you gain insight in an easy and inexpensive way, thus getting you one step ahead of your competitors.

Samsung today announced the Samsung Galaxy S 4 at their Unpacked 2013 event in New York. The device is the latest in the popular Galaxy series of phones, and offers some additional features on top of the usual bump in system specs. Samsung confirmed that the S 4 uses an octa-core A15 ARM processor that runs at an impressive 1.6GHz, coupled with 2GB of RAM. Moreover, the phone has a 5” 1080p AMOLED screen and a powerful PowerVR SGX 544MP3 GPU. Android 4.2.2 comes as standard too.

Here’s the full list of the Samsung Galaxy S 4’s specifications:

Octa-core 1.8GHz A15 ARM CPU

2GB RAM

5” 1080p AMOLED Display (441 ppi)

PowerVR SGX 544MP3 GPU

16GB/32GB/64GB storage

microSD slot

2600mAh battery

13MP camera with auto-focus and LED flash (2MP secondary camera)

Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4, NFC, Micro-USB, GPS, Infrared

130 grams weigh

7.9 mm thickness

These specs mean that the S 4 is currently the most powerful phone on the market. Whether it can stay there for long is another matter, with Apple reportedly poised to announce the rumoured iPhone 5S later in the year. HTC and Sony are also developing their devices at an incredibly rapid rate. However, Samsung didn’t want to only rely on the spec announcement at their Unpacked 2013 event. Their main bullet points seemed to be reserved for motion-based gimmicks.

Moreover, Samsung are still sticking with a plastic housing for the S 4. Whilst this will make sure the phone remains light, it has the disadvantage of breaking easily and some users don’t like the aesthetic effect created by the polycarbonate plastic. However, using this material helps Samsung keep their costs down. In turn, this means they can keep churning out large shipments of their devices and use the excess funds to deploy expensive advertising campaigns.

Samsung has used their new position as one of the leaders of the smartphone pack to generate huge amounts of hype for their products. The main Galaxy S phone series gets sizeable events every year, with Samsung cleverly positioning these events in-between Apple’s large announcements. This means that Samsung can carve their own section of the market and get their fair share of the limelight. Coupled with their advertising clout, the company has really pushed themselves into the mainstream consciousness.

The Galaxy S devices are an important product line for Samsung. They’ve used them to evolve their entire brand and put themselves ahead of the competition. The original Galaxy S was released on 4th June 2010, and became a surprising breakthrough product. It went on to sell 24 million units. Samsung followed up with the Galaxy S II nearly a year later on 2nd May 2011. The phone got high praise from reviewers and customers alike, going on to sell 40 million units. Many individuals believed that the S II was the first real Android flagship device built for the masses, replacing the HTC Desire (the previous king of Android).

The Galaxy S III was released on 29th May 2012. Feedback was immediately very high and Samsung hit their advertising stride to propel the device to 40 million units sold to date. The S III cemented Samsung’s place at the top of the Android pile, giving them extensive worldwide sales. All of these Galaxy S devices are still selling well today, and have given Samsung enough funding to invest in new product lines (such as the Galaxy Note and Ace devices) for a variety of different users. They’ve used these other products to corner as many markets as possible, placing themselves as accessible to an assortment of demographics.

Samsung seem to be going from strength to strength, with their growth set to continue based on current projections. User feedback is at an all-time high and their mobile product sales are remarkably strong. The company has designs on a new US HQ in order to attract new business and employment opportunities as well as new products such as watches in the pipeline, it seems Samsung will probably be around for a very long time. The Galaxy S 4 will be released on April 26th in the UK, with the device hitting 327 operators across 155 countries in a similar timeframe.

BlackBerry (the company formerly known as ‘RIM’) finally released BlackBerry 10 at a high-profile worldwide launch event today. The long-awaited revamp of the BlackBerry platform is seen by many as a last ditch effort to combat iOS and Android. BlackBerry’s event detailed the new OS as well as several new devices to push the ecosystem into the increasingly-crowded smartphone market. To help them do this, they’ve also announced that BlackBerry World (formerly BlackBerry App World) will sell music, TV shows and movies.

Devices with physical QWERTY keyboards have become rare during the smartphone rat race, and BlackBerry hopes to exploit that niche with the new BlackBerry Q10. BlackBerry’s track record with producing such devices shows they have a proven pedigree for designing useful physical keyboards, but whether it will be enough to tempt business users from their large screen iPhones and Android devices remains to be seen.

To take on the large screen contingent of the smartphone sector, BlackBerry has also announced the new BlackBerry Z10. BlackBerry is no stranger to these types of devices, but they haven’t pushed them as the main core of their business until now. In theory, this could be a smart strategy. Mobile device users are now obsessed with consuming entertainment content on the go and connecting with their friends via social media.

Looking at the software, it seems that BlackBerry has taken great care to make sure BlackBerry 10 scales across their two form factors without harming the experience. However, it seems like BlackBerry is splitting the BlackBerry brand into two key user groups: the business elite (BlackBerry Q10) and the regular smartphone users (BlackBerry Z10). Both groups offer unique opportunities for BlackBerry.

Their history in the business sector shows that they know how to create useful enterprise solutions. Surprisingly, other smartphone manufacturers haven’t been able to fully capitalise on this market yet so BlackBerry could potentially entice that audience back. It will take a lot of effort though, as iOS devices are gathering some traction in the enterprise space and Samsung is also looking at increasing their enterprise portfolio.

On the other hand, their experiences with regular smartphone users have been somewhat troubled. BlackBerry App World was often criticised for being clunky as well as not offering an easy experience for both developers and end-users. Moreover, it didn’t offer any media content for its users. BlackBerry believes that BlackBerry World will make up for these lost opportunities. They’ve worked hard to encourage developers to code for the platform and have made great strides with offering multimedia content with a whole host of partners.

BlackBerry thinks that they’ve managed to solve the work/personal divide by allowing users to toggle their device between work and personal mode in a system they’re calling ‘BlackBerry Balance’. Previous implementations of this feature have been on other devices before, but they were cumbersome or not effective. The BlackBerry 10 version of this feature seems to seamlessly stitch work and personal information into one secure package that will inspire bring your own device (BYOD) evangelists. Coupled with BBM’s new video chat and screen chat features, BlackBerry has thought of some useful features for all their potential user-bases.

Furthermore, the popular decision to remove the monthly BlackBerry service fee will allow the company to compete on a level playing field and market their devices to more users. The economy and their rivals have obviously forced their hand on this matter, but at least it shows that BlackBerry is listening to the market and making changes (albeit very slowly). Despite this, BlackBerry’s executives don’t seem to be publicly admitting that the company’s previous approaches were wrong. Such own-goals will further damage the company’s image and undo the positive feedback they’re trying to generate with BlackBerry 10.

End-user reception will be the ultimate judge on whether BlackBerry 10 is a success. BlackBerry has responded to their poor financial results by going back to the drawing board and creating a new experience that reflects the modern needs of smartphone users. This time, it appears as if they really have listened to the community’s feedback and used that to fix most of the issues that have plagued their previous OS versions.

However, all these changes may be too late. While BlackBerry has been flatlining, Apple and Google have taken the smartphone market by storm through offering superior experiences that adapt to their user’s needs. If BlackBerry is to remain relevant, they will have to catch up extremely quickly and offer something that their rivals can’t. Fortunately, we won’t have long to find out what will happen. BlackBerry 10 devices will be released in the coming weeks across all of RIM’s major territories, with the UK getting the BlackBerry Z10 tomorrow.

Most businesses have benefited from high-speed internet to their premises for a long time. Email, VOIP, video conferencing, collaboration tools and research has become an essential part of everyday business life. Fortunately, our internet connections have kept up and made these key processes incredibly easy. Even home internet connections are starting to reach business-level speeds, which is enabling working from home as a real alternative to the old way of working.

However, there is an elephant in the room that working professionals seem to gloss over. Our current mobile internet connections are extremely poor for the business tasks talked about above, as well as tethering across multiple devices. 3G/HSDPA may be able to achieve respectable speeds, but it’s still suffering from poor coverage in some areas and will never be able to achieve the low latency require for effective video conferencing. Moreover, signal congestion is becoming a real problem as the UK’s population continues to increase at an exponential rate.

The answer to these problems was previously thought to be Wi-Fi hotspots in more convenient locations – trains, supermarkets and restaurants for example. However, these services have messy user experiences requiring personal information to create accounts as well as ridiculous data caps, poor speeds and high prices for extended usage. Some even block VPN usage, which is inadequate for security-conscious businesses.

The real answer for the mobile data conundrum is 4G (also known as LTE in some territories). It offers rapid internet speeds (for both upstream and downstream bandwidth) and a truly business-class solid connection. Furthermore, it offers low latency, which should prove crucial going forward as all forms of communication become internet-based. An overlooked aspect of the new technology is IPv6 support. As the world’s IPv4 addresses become exhausted, IPv6 will become essential. With all of these combined features, 4G is no doubt the future of mobile data. People are constantly connected to the internet, and the demand for connections which match that demand has increased exponentially.

However, there are some problems with how 4G is being rolled out in the UK. The process is taking too long, and this has led to EE (formerly Everything Everywhere, the holders of T-Mobile UK and Orange UK) launching their own 4G service before the official 4G signal spectrum auction takes place. This has created its own problems, as some customers believe that EE’s contract prices are far too high plus users have to get a whole new device, SIM and contract to use the service. EE is also facing bad feedback for their slow rollout, with only the major UK cities currently covered. Additionally, the restrictive data caps have created some frustration. Despite this, reviews believe the service is significantly faster than 3G.

Fortunately, EE’s problems will be fixed over time. Once more competition appears on the market, there will be more consumer choice and more demand for cost-effective services. Businesses should remain calm until that time; otherwise they will run the risk of getting locked-in to costly contracts. Regardless of what you decide is best for your business; 4G is definitely the future. It’s faster than some home internet connections, supports most (if not all) business services and will become the standard for mobile data communication.

Brand image is incredibly important in the modern world. Customers can now instantly view feedback about your brand with a few button presses and voice their opinions on a variety of platforms. Therefore, it’s essential to make sure your business has strong customer service and works with businesses that want to protect your brand.

SBE has several aftermarket service solutions that have interwoven brand reputation protection throughout their core offerings across our Global Care Performance platform. Everything from our frond end solutions, repair services, recycling and recovery solutions and our analytics and integration solutions is dedicated to preserving your brand’s integrity.

However, having a strong brand isn’t enough in this harsh economic climate. Businesses have to be extremely cautious of their budget and make sure they’re getting the very best value for money. Unfortunately, this can sometimes lead to a poor return on investment. Some companies cut too many corners to provide the cheapest price, and they don’t deliver on their promises. This can result in poor feedback and reduced brand reputation.

However, SBE’s aftermarket service solutions deliver the best of both worlds. They are incredibly cost effective but at the same time provide high quality output, whilst simultaneously ensuring brand loyalty through enhanced customer service. We defy the common misconception that a full solution has to be costly, and we understand your business’ frustration. We know you want to provide the best possible customer service for your customers, but financial constraints can enormously affect that. SBE can accommodate businesses of all sizes and all budgets with full aftermarket service solutions.

Paying less for your aftermarket service solutions should allow your business to pass on those savings to your customers, which should help you compete in your marketplace. With so much choice in the marketplace, customers aren’t afraid to switch to a different brand if they think they can get a better deal. The secret is that you need to provide the best deal before they even think about switching. Obviously, there are clear financial constraints here but SBE can help you get the best bargain for your customers.

Customers expect low prices as well as high levels of care. In many ways, they’re in the same situation as your business: they want to get the highest return on their investment without any unnecessary sacrifices. SBE will help your business exceed their expectations and deliver best-in-class service to your end-users through mature pricing structures that can adapt to your business. Your customers will immediately appreciate the differences we can offer over our competitors, as well as the dedication we apply to every aspect of our businesses.

Throughout our history, we have had to help a large variety of businesses from all different types of backgrounds across the financial and reputation spectrum. We treated all of those businesses equally and ensured they delivered on all of the promises they made to their customers. SBE fully accepts that we are accountable for our partner’s end-users, and we will always strive to create aftermarket service solutions that will better facilitate their needs.

If your business is interested in taking advantage of our unique aftermarket service solutions, please get in touch. We can’t wait to show you how we can protect your brand whilst providing cost effective solutions first-hand.

The copywriter profession can be overlooked in the modern business arena. As education standards have improved and social media has took hold, some business leaders may feel that hiring a copywriter is unnecessary. These businesses either ask someone in another position to write their copy in-house or outsource it to a professional copywriting company.

Whilst these solutions may prove to be useful in the short-term, they aren’t reliable for long-term copy production. External companies often don’t know the inner workings of the businesses they’re asked to write for and as a result, can’t create content that fits in with the business’ house style or core interests. Whilst this may be fine for small companies that don’t have the resources to hire dedicated copywriters, larger companies need to take advantage of this role to differentiate their brand.

Hiring dedicated copywriters and bringing them in-house alongside your staff will greatly enhance your business. Copywriters can ensure that your house style is maintained across all of your business offerings and provide a central pillar of support for staff members that need additional assistance with written English. This can be especially useful if your business has a worldwide reach and staff of various nationalities, which may have their own languages and/or styles of writing. Standardising that output will showcase the fact that your company has strong leadership and one dedicated voice.

Another benefit of dedicated copywriters is that most copywriters can provide support for both internal and external documentation as well as marketing material. This is useful in that it can further enhance your business’ writing style and give your copy a cohesive feel. In turn this can enhance brand identity, which could lead to other brands wanting to work with you and becoming attached to your brand.

Moreover, the information age has created a thirst for transparent copy that can be easily digested in a digital format on a plethora of devices. Whether that format is an app, a website, a PDF or any other form of document doesn’t matter, the content that’s in those needs to be similar. Cohesion across these forms of media is surprisingly still lacking in business, even though there’s plenty of available marketing opportunities that can come from sharing resources in this way. What’s more, this can help save time and free your marketing teams to engage in other tasks.

If your audience expects a simplified marketing message, you should provide them with that and follow up with more detailed material after first contact. However, if you wish to provide in-depth material you should teach your copywriters about that aspect of your company and give them anything they require to create their copy. On the whole, copywriters offer a great value proposition that require little spend for a big return.

The best copywriters also have other skills such as social media experience and sub-editing capabilities. With these copywriters, it’s important to give them a strong direction but still allow them to have the freedom they require to build their role in the way they see fit. If you encourage them to act as gatekeepers to any copy your business releases, you should see positive results immediately.

Repair status visibility is a major point of contention for both consumer and enterprise-facing businesses. Many companies believe that making their repair processes transparent could lead to customers seeing “too much” information or that their repairs are taking longer than an estimated timeframe. However, it doesn’t have to be that way.

As with most things in business, honesty is always the best policy. Displaying a customer’s repair status needs a mixture of control and transparency. Don’t be afraid to unveil bad news but be careful how you handle it. A customer obviously doesn’t want to be told that a repair is not going smoothly, but if you can minimise the effect by explaining why that will be appreciated. Use the repair status as a tool to bridge communications with the customer and bring them onside with your company.

At a time when business is depicted in a negative public light, this communication can prove crucial when dealing with customers. This goes beyond the simple ‘being nice’ concept that is taught to customer support. Your new mindset should be to fully empathise with your base users and understand them. Many businesses seem to forget that their customers pay their wages and help them grow, so don’t be afraid to give something back.

To truly reach your customers, you need to think like them and be where they are. If you have a repair status portal or other such mechanism that is accessible by call centres, at the POS and/or online, this will greatly benefit your business.

Case study: SBE Ltd Repair Status

SBE Ltd offers a repair status tracking portal that works in this manner. It is accessible to the customer support team in their call centres, available at the POS and has a major presence online.

The SBE Ltd repair status tracking portal is unique in that it offers completely secure repair status tracking. Customers and end-users that need to use the portal have to provide at least two forms of identification in order to see their repair status, which means that they can only see information about their specific device repair.

Moreover, the repair status portal provides complete visibility about a repair. Going by our ethos of being completely honest, we’ll let the customer know if we’re waiting for a specific part to be delivered or if we had to outsource the repair. This is information that companies normally like to hide, but in our experience the benefits from that only help your company’s image in the short term.

Moreover, SBE Ltd has an area that registered SBE UK employees and collaborative personnel can access to see more about a device’s repair. Again, this gives more visibility in the repair process and allows their team to easily provide information for customers as well as efficiently deal with support requests. It’s also worth mentioning that all of SBE Ltd’s repair status portals integrate with the SBE Global Care Platform. This means that our repair status portals integrate with our front end solutions, repair services and analytics services.

A plethora of other companies agree with our stance on repair status visibility, and have subsequently chosen us to offer repair status tracking portals for them. These include T-Mobile UK’s Repair tracker, which has had great feedback from its users. SBE Ltd is always monitoring all of their repair status portals and making sure they have as much uptime as possible, as they understand that these are integral for customers wishing to view their repair status.

If you would like to know how a SBE Ltd-developed repair status portal will benefit your business, feel free to get in touch.

Social media has become the de facto standard for communication in this modern era of smartphones and super-connectivity. People can now get information from anyone or anything they want at an incredible speed. As a result, instant gratification is expected throughout society and this has indirectly affected how the business world interacts with the public sphere.

The obvious benefit of using social media is that it provides a central point of communication for your customers, and provides them with the freedom to contact your business at a time that suits them. Business hours don’t always align with your customers’ availability, so being able to work in this asynchronous manner can greatly enhance how you service those customers.

This has substantially changed how companies approach customer support. For example, we regularly receive messages from our customers via Twitter. We then respond to the individual customer and if necessary, seek their permission to follow up via direct message. This step is important, as it essentially takes a public chat (that is accessible to anyone on the internet) and turns it into a private conversation with the customer. The customer gets a personalised service that allows them to talk to a real-life person within Twitter’s secure barriers and we avoid a lengthy support case that might have needed department escalation. Moreover, this avenue of communication is great for call avoidance as the customer receives the same information than if they talked to us via the phone.

Facebook pages offer a similar set-up, with the new introduction of the timeline re-design and the ability for customers to send private messages to the page’s owners. Our Global page and our UK/Ireland pages have this facility, which has proved popular with our customers. We also run the same initiative on Google+, with our Global page and UK page being easily accessible.

We respond to any public comment or private message we get on our social network accounts. Moreover, we get involved with conversations within the community on all the services we’re a part of and try to encourage more conversation by sharing information that we find interesting. Sharing is important for social networks, as many brands think they should just use their accounts to promote their own content, but they could greatly increase their effectiveness by also sharing content from the community and all over the internet. Sharing content can create discussion and gives your brand the ability to express itself.

Social networks can be useful for marketing and sales too. You can specifically advertise a particular product and ask other brands for recommendations, which you can then share with the community to showcase how the product works in the real world. Your business can also connect with interested parties to answer questions about products, and this can also work the other way if you’re interested in asking questions about someone else’s product. Most individuals and companies are more than forthcoming with information on their social network accounts, so taking advantage of that will be beneficial for any business.

The importance of business-orientated social media shouldn’t be underestimated. LinkedIn has now reached 10 million users in the UK and is a major tool for businesses to introduce themselves to potential employees as well as other companies. The professional networks the service can create are significant, which we’ve proved on our Global page and our UK/Ireland pages. Again, these pages allow us to share with our community and showcase our products. LinkedIn’s twist though is that it allows users to see insights about the page’s followers, the page itself and the company’s employees.

If your company has localised customer-facing facilities, using online business directories can be another interesting avenue of social media to exploit. Many modern online directories include messaging facilities that often integrate with email as well as social media, which can help out with reaching customers in different locations. An example of this would be our Scoot business page for our UK arm, SBE Ltd. Customers can leave reviews as well as message us if they have additional issues. Also note how we took advantage of the ability to fill the page with as much information about the company as possible, which will help people find us and make sure that we receive relevant enquiries from our users.

Google Maps is another free service that can also provide some incredibly useful services for your company. You can not only place your business on the main service’s map, but you can verify that listing and use the tools provided to display pictures as well as an invaluable website link. Google is still integrating Maps into Google+, but the service is already having a noticeable impact on SEO. Our page has provided us with some interesting feedback which we have taken on-board. With the rise of smartphones and GPS-capable devices that interface with the service, it can be a very useful tool for bridging the gap between the digital and real world. Foursquare is a similar tool, which we have used for our UK business. It has all the usual information such as our business name, address and phone number, but also provides the ability for people to ‘check-in’ and say they’ve visited us.

An overlooked feature of most social network business accounts is that most provide your company with the ability to detail information about itself, including website links. This has invaluable marketing potential and helps to prove your page’s authenticity (especially if you link back to your social network accounts on your website, like SBE does across all of our sites). Moreover, it can be very helpful for SEO as there will be more information about your company out there for search engines to notice.

Businesses need social media to remain accessible in this modern era. Customers are available on many services at once, so you need to match them and provide them with the information they require in a timely fashion or run the risk of appearing outdated. Additionally, link to your networks from your websites (including separate links on localised websites) to increase their visibility. Plus, make use of the free tools available from the major social networks as well as business directories and search engines. Finally, provide as much useful information as possible without resorting to spam and above all, be honest.

Last week, Apple withdrew from the EPEAT (Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool) scheme. It was rumoured that their new MacBook Pro wouldn’t get the scheme’s top rating because its thin design could make it hard to recycle. Yesterday, Apple rejoined the scheme after “many loyal Apple customers” put pressure on them. You could argue that this was a highly calculated PR move to look good in the public eye, but environment schemes are incredibly important regardless of the politics.

It’s no secret that environmental concerns are a crucial component to business operation, but in these tough economic times every business is trying to cut down on unnecessary expenditure. Being certified as pro-environment shows that your business genuinely cares and wants to make a difference with the tools you have available. Responsible enterprise is not just a marketing tool; it should be the only way of doing business.

Showing your business supports recycling can have considerable business benefits. Recycling companies will obviously be impressed with the green credentials and this could provide substantial business leads within that sector which shouldn’t be ignored. With more waste than ever coming out of businesses, this could be an ideal opportunity to recuperate losses you didn’t even know you were making. With the global economy suffering from immense challenges, now is the time to look into responsibly finding additional revenue streams.

Signing up to a scheme is a good first step, but you have to make sure your business heavily invests in adhering to the environment scheme’s guidelines. Moreover, if you wish to work with a partner on this and related projects, it’s important to make sure they’re fully certified. The usual partner checks should also be enhanced, so look out for their reputation, business approach, mission and locations. There are a plethora of recycle companies out there, but there might not be many that are a perfect fit for your business. Shop around and compare businesses to your own specifications before making a commitment.

Some businesses (such as SBE) provide trade-in portals to encourage recycling from end-users. We have developed various customer specific end-to-end ‘Buy Back Incentive Schemes’ for networks and insurance companies. The market for this area is huge, and could provide everyone in the chain with a large variety of recyclable products for little cost. Obviously, this is kind to the environment but it also provides other benefits such as being cost effective, easy to set up and get running, rapid TAT and availability at POS, online or through a call centre.

Environmental concerns shouldn’t just focus on recycling; making your product easily repairable can also provide substantial benefits for both your bottom line and the world around you. Repairing devices may be a part of your support process already, but if it’s not it should be targeted as soon as possible. When coupled with recycled assets, there is considerable scope for matching environmental targets. As an added bonus, this will provide a better driver for your support process and give your customers additional options.

Asset recovery is a speciality that takes pride of place in all of SBE’s locations. We have full ISO 14000 certification that complements our other ISO certifications and allows us to be fully compliant with the law and regulations in this sensitive area. Our focus on recovering significant assets from the product and economically re-using them to their full potential makes sure you secure the maximum possible revenue from the product. This service also provides a way to re-use previously BER (beyond economic repair) devices, which would normally be disposed. We really feel that SBE makes a difference by cleanly removing assets from the supply chain without impacting the environment. We hope you do to.
